Resourceful Gardens

If you live in an apartment, or just don’t have a lot of outdoor space, there are still many ways to have a sustainable garden!

One simple way is to make an indoor container garden. You can grow individual plants, preferably from seed, in separate containers, which you can make from household items like tin cans and plastic water bottles. Place your plants near a sunny window - if the windowsill is too thin for the containers to stand on, place a table next to the window on which your garden can live. For a more whimsical effect, you can hang them on a wall outside like in this photo.

Rooftop gardening is a great alternative if you’re willing to take on a bigger project; first, make sure your house has a sturdy roof that can support a lot of weight, since rooftop gardens can be fairly heavy. You can hire a company that installs rooftop gardens professionally, or you can take on the task yourself (with the help of some friends) if you’re up for a real challenge. Although they can seem daunting, rooftop gardens are extremely rewarding once in place. They’re thought to improve insulation, as well as make your home stunning, and they allow you to really use every space to its fullest capacity, a crucial party of the philosophy of sustainability.
