In many cities across the world, the overall landscape is made up of concrete sidewalks and buildings, a vast bleak expanse with little to no greenery.  Street planting is a great way to bring some life back into your city!  Many sidewalks have empty dirt plots that are perfect for planting in.  If you have one in front of your house, start planting!  You can plant whatever you want, but the best things to plant are trees, natives, and edibles.  Trees provide oxygen and shade, and after a few years, don’t need to be watered.  Native plants require little to no care and help support the native ecosystem.  Edible plants are great because you, and anyone walking by, have easy access to fresh produce and herbs (almost) whenever you want!  If you don’t have a dirt plot on your property, or just want to do more street planting, you can look for more spaces like that in your city.  If you find one, be sure to find the owner of the space and ask permission to plant there, otherwise you may find that your plants have disappeared when you come back to check on them.  If the owner of the plot is resistant to the idea, don’t take no for an answer.  It’s especially important to get people like this to see the importance of bringing nature back into our lives.  Inform the owner on the ways that your garden would benefit them and everyone else in the city, such as providing oxygen, shade, food, as well as boosting people’s moods.  The presence of plants has been proven to lower blood pressure, increase attentiveness, and lower levels of anxiety.  Remember, don’t take no for an answer and keep greening our cities!
